Tom founded Shamiri to transform mental health for all, starting in Africa. Born and raised in poverty in rural Kenya, his academic journey led him from rural Kenya to Harvard University, where he earned a degree in Psychology and Computer Science. Tom is a TED Fellow, a Forbes 30 under 30 Global Laureate, the youngest Echoing Green Fellow, a Mulago Foundation’s Arnhold Rainer Fellow, and an Acumen Fellow, among many other awards. He has published more than 35 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals including JAMA Psychiatry, World Psychiatry, the British Medical Journal, and The Lancet. Tom founded his first venture, GreenChar, to provide low-income households, like the one he grew up in, with affordable clean energy.
Tom combines his passion for youth empowerment with his expertise in technology and mental health. Now based in Nairobi, he enjoys creative pursuits like painting and photography, alongside his dedication to global mental health innovation.
